We’re going old school for a quick and nostalgic dessert.

This simple retro poke cake takes me straight back to childhood summers. It was the potluck favorite, best served cold from the fridge, and so easy to make. For this version I swapped the fruit for patriotic red, white and blue M&M’S and kept the preparation embarrassingly straightforward. The video below shows the whole process. This recipe is the final installment in my project for M&M’S — if you like sweet treats, I’ve also shared other recipes earlier in the series.

Ingredients
- 1 batch of your favorite white cake recipe, I doubled this cake without the sprinkles
- 1 (3-ounce) box of strawberry jello
- 1 cup boiling water
- 3 cups freshly whipped cream for topping
- 1 bag M&M’S red, white and blue chocolate candies
Instructions

Prepare the cake according to the recipe you choose. Use any white cake recipe or a white cake mix for ease. I often double a confetti-style white cake and omit the sprinkles. Bake and cool the cake completely before moving on.

When the cake is cool, use the rounded end of a wooden spoon to poke holes evenly across the top. Whisk the strawberry jello mix into the boiling water until dissolved. Pour the jello mixture over the cake so it soaks into the holes and distributes across the surface. Chill the cake in the refrigerator for 2 to 4 hours or overnight to set.

Remove the cake from the fridge and spread freshly whipped cream over the top. You can use whipped heavy cream or a firm coconut cream if preferred. Frost the cake just before serving, then arrange the M&M’S to create the red, white and blue flag design or any pattern you like. Serve immediately for the best texture.
