Paloma Pitcher: Grapefruit Tequila Cocktail for Parties

My Pitcher Palomas are citrusy, fizzy, and oh-so-refreshing. Built for sharing, this grapefruit-and-tequila cocktail is the ultimate warm-weather drink. It’s low-effort, high-impact, and exactly what your summer get-togethers need.

What is a Paloma?

A Paloma is a classic Mexican cocktail that shares tequila and lime with a margarita, but swaps in grapefruit for a distinct bright flavor. Traditionally served over ice with a lime wedge or a salt-rimmed glass, a Paloma balances sweet, tart, and slightly bitter notes from grapefruit. It’s light, refreshing, and perfect for sipping on a warm afternoon or evening.

Grapefruit is the star here—its tangy bitterness keeps the drink from being overly sweet and gives a lively, zesty character that pairs beautifully with blanco (silver) tequila.

Why this recipe works

  • Bright citrus flavor: The grapefruit and lime pair for a crisp, refreshing profile that’s ideal for warm weather.
  • Easy entertaining: This pitcher cocktail requires just a few ingredients and no shaking—mix ahead and let guests serve themselves.
  • Consistent results: Mixing the base in one pitcher gives even flavor distribution, so every glass tastes balanced.
  • Flexible: Make it with grapefruit soda for convenience or swap in fresh grapefruit juice and sparkling water for a more craft-style version.

Ingredient Notes

Overhead shot of Paloma cocktail ingredients including halved grapefruits, limes, grapefruit soda, lime juice, chili-lime salt, a bowl of orange-hued juice, and fresh mint on a pink surface with scattered ice.
  • Tequila: A blanco (silver) tequila keeps the drink clean and lets the citrus shine.
  • Grapefruit: Fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice provides the essential bright, slightly bitter flavor.
  • Lime: Fresh lime juice adds acidity and balance; use freshly squeezed juice for best flavor.
  • Simple syrup: A small amount smooths the grapefruit’s bitterness—adjust based on how tart your grapefruit is.
  • Grapefruit soda: Add grapefruit soda or a fizzy alternative just before serving for the best bubbles; club soda or sparkling water can be used for a less sweet finish.

Expert Tips

  • Add soda at the last moment: Keep the soda separate until serving to preserve fizz.
  • Taste and adjust: Give the pitcher a quick taste before serving and adjust sweetness or acidity as needed.
  • Don’t ice the pitcher: Add ice to individual glasses to avoid diluting the whole batch.
  • Garnish the pitcher and glasses: Citrus slices, fresh herbs, or edible flowers in the pitcher both infuse flavor and look inviting.

Storage / Freezing

  • With grapefruit soda added: Consume within a few hours for best fizz; soda will go flat if stored too long.
  • Without soda added: The base (tequila, grapefruit juice, lime, and simple syrup) will keep in the refrigerator for up to 2–3 days. Add soda just before serving.

Pitcher Palomas are perfect for outdoor gatherings—made with grapefruit juice, tequila, lime, and a touch of sweetness for a bright, refreshing cocktail.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups grapefruit juice, strained (fresh) (about 4–5 large)
  • 2 cups tequila (blanco)
  • 5 oz. fresh lime juice (about 8 limes)
  • 3 oz. simple syrup
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 2 cups grapefruit soda (add just before serving)
  • Ice
  • For the rim: kosher salt, sugar, Tajín, or a chili-salt mix
  • Garnish: grapefruit wedges and fresh mint

Last step! If you make this, please leave a review to help others discover the recipe.

Instructions

  1. Prep the ingredients: Juice the grapefruits and limes. Fresh juice delivers the best flavor.
  2. Mix in a pitcher: In a large pitcher, combine the grapefruit juice, tequila, lime juice, simple syrup, and salt. Stir well to blend. (Avoid adding too much ice to the pitcher to prevent dilution.)
  3. Chill: Cover the pitcher and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or until ready to serve.
  4. Prepare glasses: Rub a grapefruit wedge around the rim of each glass and dip in your chosen rim salt or sugar. Fill glasses with ice.
  5. Pour and top: Stir the chilled pitcher, pour the mixture about two-thirds into each glass, then top with grapefruit soda to fill. Add more or less soda to taste.
  6. Garnish: Add a grapefruit wedge and a sprig of mint, then serve immediately.

Notes

  • With soda added: If soda has been mixed in, consume within a few hours for the best fizz.
  • Without soda added: The mixed base (tequila, grapefruit juice, lime, and simple syrup) will keep in the refrigerator for 2–3 days. Add soda just before serving to preserve bubbles.
