Freezer Meal Baked Ziti is an easy make-ahead meal that’s perfect for busy families.
With some simple planning you can keep ready-to-bake meals in the freezer for nights when you don’t have time to cook. This baked ziti freezes and reheats well, and pairs perfectly with other freezer meal ideas for busy households.

Easy Weeknight Meals for Busy Families
If dinner time feels stressful, make-ahead freezer meals like this baked ziti can take the pressure off. Assemble trays in advance, freeze them, then simply thaw and bake when you need a quick, comforting dinner.
Pasta-based freezer meals, especially those with a rich meat sauce and a creamy ricotta filling, are among the easiest to prepare and store. They’re family-friendly and reheat beautifully.
To use, move a frozen tray to the refrigerator the night before to thaw and bake the next day. If you need a shortcut, jarred pasta sauce works fine—just be sure you have enough to cover the pasta thoroughly.
Containers for Freezer Meals
You can freeze this recipe in disposable aluminum foil trays, glass or metal baking dishes, or food-grade plastic meal prep containers. Glass containers with lids work well if you prefer reusable storage.

For the photos here, two large family-size aluminum trays with cardboard lids were used. You can also divide the recipe into smaller single-serve containers if you prefer.

Recipe Prep
Prepare the meat sauce and the ricotta mixture before assembling the trays. Boil the pasta and rinse it with cold water to stop cooking and prevent sticking.

- Make or buy your pasta sauce. If making a slow-cooker meat sauce, prepare it the day before or earlier the same day so it’s cooled and ready to use.
- Mix the ricotta filling: 1 slightly beaten egg, salt, ground black pepper, dried parsley, and the ricotta cheese. Cover and chill until ready to assemble.
- Boil the pasta to al dente according to package directions, then rinse with cold water.
A large batch of homemade meat sauce is convenient to keep in the freezer for future meals—use it for this baked ziti or other pasta dishes.

Ingredients
- 1 lb (16 oz) ziti pasta
- 16 oz ricotta cheese
- 1 tablespoon fresh or dried parsley flakes
- 1 large egg, slightly beaten
- ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 4–5 cups meat or pasta sauce (about 3 cups per large tray)
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, divided

Expert Tips
- Rinse cooked pasta with cold water to keep the noodles from sticking.
- Adjust portion sizes: make two family-size trays or several single-serve containers depending on your needs.
- Label trays with the date and contents so you can rotate meals easily.
Thawing Freezer Meals
The night before baking, move the frozen tray to the refrigerator to thaw. Before baking, pour off any water that formed while thawing.

Instructions
- Divide the cooked ziti between your freezer containers (about 5–6 cups cooked pasta per large tray).
- Add 1 to 1½ cups sauce to each family-size tray and stir to coat the noodles.
- Add ½ to ¾ cup of the ricotta mixture to each tray and combine gently with the pasta and sauce.
- Stir in 1 cup shredded mozzarella into each tray so cheese is evenly distributed.
- Spread additional sauce over the top of each tray, then dot or spread the remaining ricotta over the sauce.
- Sprinkle about 1 cup shredded mozzarella over each assembled tray.
- Seal trays with cardboard lids or tight-fitting covers, crimping edges if using foil pans.
- Freeze the trays flat. Use within 3–4 months for best quality.

Cooking Directions
For aluminum or glass pans: preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Place the thawed tray on a baking sheet, remove the lid, and bake 30–45 minutes or until the center is hot and the cheese is melted.
For plastic meal prep containers: reheat in the microwave with the lid loosened for 4–5 minutes on high, checking after about 3 minutes. Heat until piping hot throughout and cheese is melted.
