As the days grow longer and spring begins to show its first signs, it’s a wonderful moment to bring some sunshine inside with a cheerful, easy craft. Sunflowers evoke warm weather, bright skies, and nature in bloom. This Pom Pom Sunflower Craft is a simple, hands-on project that’s perfect for kids and enjoyable for crafters of any age.
This activity combines different textures and basic materials to create a colorful, tactile piece. Soft yellow pom poms become the petals, brown buttons form the center, and popsicle sticks make a sturdy stem. It’s a great way to practice cutting, gluing, and fine motor skills while making a decorative piece to display.
Whether you want a fun afternoon project, a spring celebration craft, or an easy classroom activity, this sunflower will brighten any room. Follow the steps below to make your own pom pom sunflower.

Supplies Needed
- Yellow pom poms
- 2 green popsicle sticks (or paint standard popsicle sticks green with acrylic paint)
- Brown buttons
- 2 pieces of brown construction paper (one lighter, one darker)
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Strong craft glue or a hot glue gun

How to Create a Pom Pom Sunflower
Step 1: Create the Sunflower Center
Fold the darker brown construction paper in half and cut a small half-circle along the folded edge. Unfold it to reveal a neat round center piece.
Step 2: Assemble the Background
Glue the brown half-circle in the center of the lighter brown construction paper. This creates a contrasting background that will make the petals stand out.

Step 3: Draw the Petals
Use a pencil to lightly sketch petal shapes radiating around the brown circle. These guide lines will help you place the pom poms evenly.

Step 4: Make the Stem
Cut one green popsicle stick in half. Glue the two halves across a full-length stick to form a T shape, which creates a stronger stem. Attach the assembled stem beneath the brown circle and press until secure.

Step 5: Add the Petals
Apply glue inside each penciled petal and press 4–5 yellow pom poms into each space. Work around the entire circle, filling each petal until the flower looks full and even.

Step 6: Finish with the Sunflower Center
Fill the center circle by gluing brown buttons closely together until the space is covered. Press gently to secure each button so the center looks textured and full.

Allow the glue to dry completely. Once set, your pom pom sunflower is ready to display on a wall, bulletin board, or as part of a spring-themed table arrangement.
