Classic Orange Julius Recipe: Creamy Homemade Orange Drink

This week I’m taking part in United Way Hunger Action Week and wanted a quick, satisfying lunch that uses simple ingredients. The result was an Orange Julius–inspired smoothie adapted to what I had on hand. Smoothies are a fast, nutritious option for a snack or meal replacement and can be prepared in minutes. One nice benefit: when you blend drinks with ice the mixture expands, so the finished drink feels larger and more satisfying. Below is the easy recipe I used—feel free to adjust sweetness or add protein to suit your needs. Enjoy.

Orange Julius–Inspired Smoothie

This classic-style citrus smoothie is creamy, bright, and ready in under a minute. It makes a single generous serving.

  • 5–6 ice cubes
  • 1 cup orange juice (fresh or store-bought)
  • 1 egg white or powdered egg-white equivalent (optional for extra froth and protein)
  • 3 tablespoons sugar or an equivalent amount of sweetener, adjusted to taste
  • Optional: 2 tablespoons vanilla yogurt for added creaminess
  • Optional: 1 tablespoon protein powder to boost the protein content

Directions

Combine all ingredients in a blender and blend on high for 30–45 seconds, until the mixture is smooth and frothy. Pour into a chilled glass and serve immediately. If you prefer a thicker texture, add one extra ice cube or a couple of tablespoons of yogurt. For a thinner drink, stir in a little more orange juice.

Notes and Variations

  • Sweetness: Start with less sweetener and taste before adding more. Natural orange juice varies in sweetness, so adjust accordingly.
  • Non-dairy option: Replace yogurt with a dairy-free alternative, or omit it entirely for a lighter drink.
  • Safety: If you’re concerned about consuming raw egg white, use pasteurized liquid egg white or a powdered equivalent for safety.
  • Protein boost: Stir in a scoop of your preferred protein powder—vanilla works especially well with the orange flavor.
  • Make it creamier: A small slice of banana or a tablespoon of softened cream cheese can add richness without overpowering the citrus.
  • Make it for two: Double the ingredients and blend in a larger container or in two batches.

This Orange Julius–inspired smoothie is a quick, refreshing way to enjoy citrus with a creamy finish. It’s flexible, easy to customize, and perfect for a fast lunch or post-workout treat during Hunger Action Week or any busy day.
