I don’t eat fast food often, and a Big Mac is rarely on my order. But recently I had a sudden craving and, instead of driving to a restaurant, I recreated the flavor at home — and the result was outstanding. This Big Mac–inspired tater tot casserole captures the familiar flavors but feels even better when made with ingredients from your own kitchen. If you enjoy tater tots, this recipe is a must-try and delivers big on comfort and convenience.
Ingredients:

- 2 lbs ground beef (ground chicken, turkey, or venison can also be used)
- 2 lb bag frozen tater tots
- 1 yellow onion, diced
- 1 cup Thousand Island dressing
- 8 oz sharp cheddar cheese, grated
- 4 oz Velveeta, cubed (optional — substitute another cheese if preferred)
- 1/2 cup dill pickle relish
- 1/2 cup ketchup
- 1 tbsp garlic powder
- 1 tbsp onion powder
- 1 tsp salt and 1 tbsp pepper (adjust to taste)
- Shredded lettuce for topping (optional)
Can this be frozen
Yes. Bake the casserole as directed, cool it completely, then wrap it tightly with plastic wrap and foil or vacuum seal it. Thaw in the refrigerator before reheating. Reheat whole or in portions in the oven on low heat, or microwave individual servings. Note: reheated tater tots will be less crispy than when freshly baked.
How to Make it:

Preheat your oven to 400°F (204°C). Place the tater tots on a baking sheet or directly into an 11×13 baking dish and put them in the oven while you prepare the filling. This helps them start crisping so they stay crisper after baking the assembled casserole.
In a skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef with the diced onion. Drain excess grease if desired. Season the meat with the garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Stir in the Thousand Island dressing, ketchup, and dill relish until well combined.

If you choose to use Velveeta, add the cubed Velveeta to the meat mixture and stir until melted and smooth. If you prefer not to use processed cheese, omit it or substitute another melting cheese. Remove the tater tots from the oven and carefully transfer them from the baking dish. Spread the seasoned meat mixture evenly in the bottom of the dish.

Arrange the tater tots over the meat layer. Bake the assembled casserole for 20 minutes. Remove from the oven, sprinkle the grated sharp cheddar over the top, and return to the oven for another 10–15 minutes until the cheese is golden and bubbly.

The finished casserole is rich, cheesy, and full of familiar Big Mac flavors. Serve it topped with shredded lettuce and a little extra Thousand Island dressing for that classic touch.

I served this with shredded lettuce and extra dressing on top. It stands alone as a satisfying dinner, but green beans or warm dinner rolls make nice sides if you want to round out the meal.
