4 Corn Hacks for Summer Cookouts and BBQs

No summer cookout is complete without golden, buttery sweet corn. When corn is in season, each ear is bursting with natural sweetness and juice, making corn on the cob a staple at backyard barbecues and family meals. Every bite should pop with flavor and nostalgia.

To help you get the most from fresh ears, we partnered with corn experts to share four simple, reliable corn hacks that make preparing corn on the cob easier and more delicious.

So how are you cooking your corn on the cob?

On the Grill

Grilled corn on the cob is quintessential summer. The smoky, caramelized notes from the grill pair beautifully with corn’s natural sweetness, creating a memorable side for any outdoor meal.

One of the easiest and most effective grilling tips is to leave the husk on until you’re ready to eat. The husk shields the kernels from direct heat, helps retain moisture, and steams the corn gently from the inside. It also makes the ears less prone to burning while still allowing a roasted character.

Easy corn hacks

Place the unshucked ears on a medium-hot grill and cook for about five to six minutes on one side, then rotate so the husks develop grill marks and another five to six minutes on the other side. Remove the corn and carefully peel back the husks—watch for steam, because the ears will be hot. If you want more char and smoky flavor, shuck the corn and put the cobs back on the grill for a couple of minutes to get light grill marks.

If you enjoy bold flavors, try Mexican-style toppings like cotija, lime, and chili powder for a bright, savory finish.

In the Microwave, in the Husk

No grill? No problem. The microwave can produce tender, juicy corn in minutes, and keeping the husk on is a straightforward trick for even results.

Add some grill marks!

Trim the very top and bottom of the husk so the ear fits in the microwave, but leave the majority of the husk intact. Microwave each ear for three to five minutes depending on the power of your microwave and the size of the ear. When it’s done, the ear should slide easily out of its husk. Finish with a pat of butter, a sprinkle of salt, or a dusting of chili powder to taste.

In the Microwave, Without the Husk

If your ears are already shucked or you prefer to remove the husk before cooking, you can mimic the protective effect of the husk with a damp paper towel. This creates a steamy environment that cooks the kernels evenly.

Wrap each shucked ear in a damp (not dripping) paper towel and microwave individually for three to five minutes. Times vary by appliance and corn size, so check one ear first to find the timing that works best for you. Use oven mitts or a towel to remove the hot package, unwrap carefully, and add butter and seasonings.

In the Air Fryer

Air fryers are convenient for quick, flavorful results with less added fat. They can create a slightly browned, caramelized surface while keeping kernels juicy inside.

Bite into tasty, juicy corn

For air frying, use shucked corn. Lightly oil the basket and season each ear with salt and pepper or your preferred spice blend. Preheat the air fryer to 375°F, place two ears in the basket (or as many as your model accommodates without crowding), and air fry for about 10 minutes. Cooking times will vary with ear size and air fryer model. The result should be tender kernels with slight browning and a concentrated corn flavor.

Finish the ears with butter or a squeeze of citrus for balance. The air fryer method is a great way to get distinct texture and flavor without much fuss.
