This black Halloween sangria combines brandy, orange liqueur, pomegranate juice, grapes, cherries, and blackberries for a fruity, boozy drink with minimal ingredients. Made in a pitcher, it’s an easy, spooky cocktail that’s perfect for a Halloween party.

If you love Halloween as much as I do, embrace it fully: think witchy black velvet cake and festive charcuterie boards. A themed cocktail is essential, whether you’re passing out candy or hosting a party. After many get-togethers, I’ve found that sangria is the perfect party drink — simple to make in large batches and crowd-pleasing every time.

Why this sangria works so well:

  • Sangria is the quickest, easiest cocktail — just mix and chill.
  • It’s made in a pitcher, ideal for parties and groups.
  • Using dark fruit and red wine gives the drink a naturally spooky look without food coloring.
  • It’s a make-ahead cocktail that benefits from sitting for a few hours.

Choose a fruity wine

A decanter of brandy, brown bowl of blackberries, pitcher of pomegranate juice, bottle of red wine, grey bowl of grapes, glass plate of cherries, glasses of Triple sec and simple syrup, glasses of red wine, figs, and a black skull on a black background.

Rioja is classic for sangria, but any fruity, dry red wine works well. Choose a wine on the drier side to avoid an overly sweet final drink. For the rest of the cocktail you’ll need unsweetened pomegranate juice, brandy (or vodka if you prefer), orange liqueur, simple syrup, black grapes, blackberries, black cherries, and figs.

To make simple syrup at home, combine equal parts sugar and water in a small pot, bring to a simmer for 1–2 minutes until the sugar dissolves, then cool completely.

3 easy steps

Three steps to making a wine cocktail. In photo 1, a pitcher with cherries, blackberries, and grapes on a black table next to alcohol bottles, grapes, figs, a bottle of wine, and a black skeleton. In photo 2, the pitcher has wine and juice in it. In photo 3, a woman's hand stirs the cocktail.
Mix the fruit, wine, pomegranate juice, brandy, orange liqueur, and simple syrup in a large pitcher. Stir well, cover, and refrigerate for a few hours. Serve over ice and garnish.

Let the sangria sit for at least 2 hours so the flavors can meld — that’s the secret to great sangria. You can also prepare it the night before; just cover and refrigerate. Avoid making it too far in advance so the fruit stays fresh.

Make-ahead & refrigerate

This sangria tastes best after chilling for a couple of hours. Prepare it ahead of time and refrigerate until serving. If you need to scale the recipe, doubling or tripling it works well for larger gatherings.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup halved black grapes (175 grams)
  • 1 cup halved black cherries, pitted (200 grams)
  • 1 cup blackberries, plus more for garnish (150 grams)
  • 750 milliliters fruity, dry red wine (1 bottle – I use Rioja)
  • 1 1/2 cups 100% pomegranate juice (360 milliliters)
  • 1/3 cup brandy (80 milliliters)
  • 1/3 cup orange liqueur (80 milliliters)
  • 1/4 cup simple syrup, more or less to taste (60 milliliters)
  • 4 figs, halved

Equipment

  • 1 Pitcher or punch bowl

Instructions

  • Add the halved grapes, pitted cherries, and blackberries to a pitcher or punch bowl.
  • Pour the wine, pomegranate juice, brandy, orange liqueur, and simple syrup over the fruit and stir to combine.
  • Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight. Serve chilled over ice if desired and garnish with additional blackberries and halved figs. Enjoy!

Notes

I use 1/4 cup simple syrup here for balanced sweetness. If your wine is sweeter or you prefer a drier sangria, start with half that amount and adjust to taste.

Letting the sangria rest for at least 2 hours allows the flavors to blend and gives the best results.

Choose a wine you enjoy drinking but don’t feel the need to use an expensive bottle since it will be mixed with other ingredients.

For larger groups, double or triple the recipe. For a lighter red option, try Pinot Noir.
