Hosting a dinner party? Everyone loves Italian food. Use these tips to create an inviting Italian-themed tablescape for your gathering.
It’s that time of the month—our virtual dinner club is back, and this month’s theme is Italian. Who doesn’t love Italian food? We certainly do, and we also love setting a warm, stylish table to match.
I’ll admit I felt a little nervous about styling an Italian tablescape. The food part was easy; the décor felt trickier. I didn’t want the cliché red-and-white checkered tablecloth and faux grapes, so I turned to Pinterest for inspiration and put together a plan that feels timeless and approachable.
We began this virtual supper club with friends last year and have enjoyed sharing monthly tablescape ideas and recipes ever since. Our group includes Stacy, Rachel, Jen, Michele, and us—AnnMarie and Anne. We love swapping ideas and hope these tips help you create a beautiful Italian table for your next gathering.
What Did I Use to Style an Italian Tablescape?

Over a year of monthly tablescape styling has helped me collect a few staple pieces that make setting a table simple and polished. For this Italian look I combined neutral textures with classic accents:
- Water hyacinth charger or round woven placemat as a base
- Matte black metal chargers layered for contrast
- Everyday dinner and salad plates
- Small dipping bowls for olive oil and balsamic
- Mini round wood cutting boards used as individual bread plates
- Striped linen napkins for a subtle pattern
- Stemless and regular wine glasses plus sparkling water bottles
- Flatware that feels a bit special—use what you love
I often use what I already own and add one or two new pieces for interest. This time the mini round wood cutting boards were a favorite find to serve bread and add rustic charm.
How To Create a Neutral Centerpiece

A strong centerpiece anchors any tablescape. For an Italian-themed table, a neutral centerpiece filled with greenery, candles, and olive branches keeps the look elegant and seasonless. Use a mix of pillar candles and low votives for warm light and tuck faux or fresh olive stems and simple greenery around them.
Olive branches are an iconic, understated element that convey Italian style without being gimmicky. The result is a centerpiece that works for a dinner party and for everyday dining room décor.
How to Set Each Place Setting

Layering creates depth. Start with a woven charger, add a matte metal charger for contrast, then place dinner and salad plates. Tuck a striped linen napkin between the plates or place it under the salad plate for a refined touch.
Top each setting with a mini round wood cutting board to serve as a personal bread plate. Add a small dipping bowl for olive oil and balsamic nearby. Include sparkling water in little bottles and two wine glasses—one for red or white and one for sparkling—so guests can choose their preference.
What’s an Italian Themed Table Without Bread or Wine?

Bread and wine are essential. Dress up simple crusty rolls by wrapping them in Kraft-colored tissue and tying with twine, then top each roll with a sprig of fresh rosemary. Present them on the mini cutting boards for an inviting, rustic detail.
Serve good olive oil and a quality balsamic in small dipping bowls, and consider an Italian herb salt for rubbing onto bread. These small flavor details elevate the experience and are easy to source at specialty stores or markets.

Choose a few reasonably priced Italian wines—red, white, and a sparkling option—so guests can pair drinks with the menu. You don’t need expensive bottles to create a delightful wine selection.
How to Decorate a Dining Room for an Italian Dinner Party

Extend the theme beyond the table. Add a few decorative bottles with olive stems or a rustic vase on a console table. Keep styling simple and cohesive—extra rolls in a wood bowl, more sparkling water within reach, and a few candle clusters all contribute to a welcoming atmosphere.
Leave space on a larger sideboard for serving dishes so guests can help themselves comfortably during the meal.
