Kahlua Vodka Ice Cream Cocktail Recipe for Dessert Drinks

Simply change up the way you serve a White Russian and you’ve got this Vodka & Kahlua Ice Cream Cocktail I’ve titled a Ghost in the Graveyard. It’s a fantastic dessert cocktail with vanilla ice cream, black vodka and coffee liqueur.

I’m not a huge Halloween fan, but I do enjoy creating seasonal cocktails that are fun without being too spooky. This Vodka & Kahlua Ice Cream Cocktail, which I call Ghost in the Graveyard, takes the familiar White Russian concept and turns it into a creamy dessert in a glass. It’s simple to make, indulgent, and the ice cream turns the drink into a decadent treat.

I’ve never been fond of scary movies or Halloween frights—my childhood memories of frightful scenes are enough for me—and I prefer to keep holiday décor subtle. Orange and black decorations have never appealed to me, so instead of elaborate displays I focus on a festive drink. Cocktails let me add a ghoulish nod without going overboard.

A classic White Russian mixes vodka, coffee liqueur and cream; for this version I substituted vanilla ice cream for the cream. The ice cream adds texture and a richer, more dessert-like quality. It’s a great after-dinner sipper and an easy way to elevate the familiar combination of vodka and Kahlua.

For a dramatic, dark appearance I experimented with black vodka. It’s not absolutely necessary—regular vodka works perfectly—but a dark vodka can add a fun, theatrical element for Halloween-themed drinks. If you want the spooky look, try a black vodka. Otherwise, the coffee liqueur alone provides plenty of depth and color without extra expense.

This cocktail is meant to be enjoyed like a dessert. Place a scoop of vanilla ice cream in a chilled rocks glass, pour the chilled vodka and coffee liqueur over it, and serve with a spoon. The flavors are familiar but richer thanks to the ice cream, and the presentation feels special.

In my photos I used dry ice to create a smoky effect. It looks dramatic but the effect is brief and requires careful handling—dry ice is extremely cold and should never be ingested. For a safer presentation, add dry ice to a communal punch bowl or use a smoke machine or fog effect around the serving area rather than placing dry ice in individual drinks.

This cocktail is quick to prepare and crowd-pleasing. It’s one of those easy, elegant party drinks I’ll be sipping while enjoying Halloween visitors. If you want a festive, not-too-scary beverage that still feels seasonal, this Vodka & Kahlua Ice Cream Cocktail is a perfect choice. Enjoy responsibly and have a fun, safe Halloween!
